Who We Are
Carbon Securities is a conservation company working in the Brazilian amazon forest to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. |
Why we focus on the Amazon Tropical Forest? The reason is simple: healthy tropical forests are central to solving climate change. The clearing, logging and burning of tropical forests release about a fifth of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions that are caused by human activities. Roughly half of all of the carbon that leaks into the atmosphere when tropical trees are killed by bulldozers or chainsaws is absorbed again by living tropical trees that are growing and storing carbon in their wood. If we slow the loss of tropical forests while speeding their recovery, the chances of avoiding the worst impacts of climate change become considerably larger. Tropical forests can buy humanity precious time to make the much slower transition to low-emission energy systems.

Chico Mendes pioneered the world’s first tropical forest conservation initiative advanced by forest peoples themselves. His work led to the establishment of Brazil’s extractive reserves protected forest areas that are inhabited and managed by local communities. Chico Mendes became world-famous when he was gunned down for his work in 1988.
Today, Carbon Securities has partnered with the Chico Mendes Foundation that is managed and operated by Ilzamar Mendes and Elenira Mendes, Chico Mendes' wife and daughter. We are glad to keep alive Chico Mendes spirit and initiative and we will be always fighting to save the rainforest together.
Elenira Mendes is one of our spokesperson in Brazil and has been directly engaged and responsable for the success of our projects.
